Who are all of the companies in the US and Canada that are actively
scrapping railcars, and number of units scrapped by type?cath-ga,
I guess I am looking for both the salvage companies and those
companies that just scrap the cars. Knowing the distinction would be
beneficial, but not essential. My objective is to contact these
companies to purchase specific recyclable parts before they are
destroyed. Knowing the number of freight cars that each company
scraps annually will give me an idea of the total volume available of
the parts I am interested in. Thanks! lwwHi lww,
I just got a belated e-mail from someone I contacted about your
question. They recommended a remarkable resource called the
Pocket List of Railroad Officials. You can find a description
at http://www.railresource.com/pocketlist/index.cfm, if you
don't already have it. You can order it online for $189.
It apparently has 30,000 names of people to contact about railroad
business. cath-gaHi lww,
one more late-breaking e-mail recommends another possibility for you:
A salvage company that is located in Ft Collins Colorado. They are
Colorado Iron and Metal. 1400 E Mulberry, Ft Collins, Co 80524.
Their phone numbers are 970-482-7707 and their fax is 970-493-7821.
The owner is Kevin Garvin.
Take care, cath-gaDear lww,
Thanks for your question. It opened up a whole new world I never
knew existed! Also, thanks for letting me know that you need the list
to find recyclable parts. That made it much easier to get the
information you need.

Progress Rail Services-
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Everyone I talked with told me Progress is the biggest railcar
dismantler & seller of used parts. The Railcar parts manager
couldn?t give me an estimate of the number of cars, because she
handles only the parts, but she confirmed that Progress is one
of the largest in the nation.

David J. Joseph Company-
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The World?s largest scrap company-has a separate division specializing
in railcar dismantling. They are often cited as one of the big two in
the US. Commercial Rail Parts manager Ann Edwards estimates they get
2,000 to 4,000 railcars a year, a mixed bag of tankers and flat cars.
Their rather general parts catalogue can be found at:

They were recommended to me by another company as one of the big ones.
Bob Wallins did not want to tell me how many units/year they dismantle,
but asked that you contact him directly.

Azcon Corp

is the home page for this huge scrap company.
The railcar division of Azcon is called AZ Railcar:

Matthew Maido runs AZ Railcar: 915-892-5726
Maido confirmed for me that Azcon is one of the top five in the nation
dismantling and selling used railcar parts. He said it may take apart
anywhere from 2,000 cars one year to 10,000 railcars another.
Call him if you wish to locate parts.

An industry insider has told me that the ones I listed above comprise
most of the business. However, I came across some small companies in
my research which I will also include as being potentially helpful.
Pacific Rail Dismantling- Very small, they do sell used parts. Between
their Tucson, AZ and Colton, California locations they get about 300
cars/year.
909-370-1318
Lennie La Rocco, General Manager
Paragon Railcar Salvage-very small
http://www.unitedcapitalllc.com/
300 cars a year, 90% of them are tank cars.

Midland Reclamation-Illinois, and Texas

railroadVery helpful and complete. This information confirms some of our own
research and provided us with some new contacts. Thanks!llw,
yes, that helps. Thanks! Here's another question: is there any distinction
you want me to make between scrapping, dismantling, and salvaging the
railroad cars? Perhaps one brings more money than another, so you'd
be more interested? From what I'm learning, almost any ferrous materials
recycler will take a railcar for scrap, but a much smaller number specialize
in dismantling or salvaging...cath-gaI am specifically looking for a list of the major companies that scrap
rail freight cars, listed in order of volume, with some idea of the
total market size. I don't need all companies, but would like to know
the companies that make up 80% or so of the total market. I hope that
helps. Thanks ? lww-gaSorry! Typo on Lisa Martin's phone number (Progress) 256-840-2787. cath-gaHi lww,
I am making some progress on your question, but it's a tough one.
You should be aware that whenever a question asks for ALL of anything,
we can't guarantee that. We can probably provide you with a comprehensive
list of the most important companies, perhaps the number of units.
If you'd like to share with me any details concerning the use for
this information, it might help. Otherwise, I'll keep at it!
Best regards, cath-gaThanks very much for your kind rating and generous tip!
It was a pleasure. cath-ga#If you have any other info about this subject , Please add it free.# |
