Int'l Business Class

  • I am flying Air NZ with a UAL mileage award in business this summer, and i was wondering how you would rate their service? How does it compare to United? I will be flying in a 747, transatlantic.

    I would appreciate any info.

    Thanks!

  • I suspect that this will change when the new J class arrives - I would hope that NZ will go to a lot of trouble to fix the only inferior part of its product.

  • You get personal DVD players in business on the A320s because there is no PTV. I'm fairly sure you won't get them in long haul business unless you have a particularly accommodating crew...

  • Chances are probably non-existant on 767 (probably dont carry any since no first class) but worth a try on 747.

  • As Kiwi Flyer mentioned, the food wine and service will be superior to UA. However, the seat comfort and IFE will be inferior to UA

  • Thanks, that's what i was looking for

  • Im not sure but I think for the long light from NZ to US and to LHR, only first has the personal DVDs as of right, however it certainly wouldnt hurt to ask as a biz passenger since I'm sure they carry plenty and not everyone wants one (at the same time) anyway.

I got one in business between SYD and ZQN, but not between AKL and SFO. However I didn't ask for one on the flight to SFO as I wanted to sleep, so it's possible they have them for those who ask. Each business seat on the 747 has the personal video screen with several different movies playing at once.

  • Service, food and wine are currently the key strengths of NZ long-haul. I havent flown United much but would rate NZ ahead on service.

    Enjoy your flight to/from London.

  • All the A320 have DVD palyers as there is no inseat PTV.
The ony 767 with DVD players is the soile remaining 767-200 ZK-NBA as this aircraft does not have inseat PTV.
On the 747, DVD players are only available to First Class. Crew have been instructed not to give to Business class except in extreme circumstances eg PTV broken and no spare seats

  • globetrekker- thanks for the input. I'm flying trans-atlantic...looking forward to it.

  • I asked for a personal DVD when flying in C from LAX to LHR on 2 July. The steward was pleasant, but said there are no DVDs for business class. I pointed out that the inflight magasine (Premiere?) referred to DVDs in C and F, but he wouldn't budge.

I used the personal DVD during other legs in F, and wasn't overly impressed by the movie selection, even though I had no trouble finding a couple of things to watch.

  • I would say Air NZ's service and food are very good. The IFE is about the same as UA, although they had the personal DVD players between Australia and New Zealand, which was great. Also I found their lounges very nice and overall better than UA's. The trans-Pacific business class seats are definitely inferior to UA, but it sounds like they are aware of this and have announced a plan for new seating. Have a good trip!
