Santiago hotels with not too much travelling time from airport

January 7th, 2009   Filed Under naaktbelgisch.com   edit

  • I have two one night stays coming up in Santiago. I'd like to stay in the same hotel both times so that I can leave luggage the first time and collect it the second time.

I can see on the Santiago map where hotels are in relation to the airport but I'm not sure of traffic and travel times (which I'd like to minimise if possible as it's two return trips). Also it'd be quite nice if the hotel I stayed in was accessible for some limited sightseeing (either close to something interesting or next to a metro stop perhaps?).

Which area of the city and/or hotel would you suggest?

For easy Metro access, and an area close to nearly everything, I'd suggest Providencia, preferably between "Pedro de Valdivia" and "Los Leones" Metro stations, and not too far from Providencia Av., or 11 de Septiembre Av. Dont' worry too much about traffic to/from the airport, as it is connected by a reasonably fast freeway. Sightseeing in Providencia is limited. Beware that several hotels keep stored luggage in less than fully secure areas.

  • ....Of course, I only stayed at the San Cristobal Tower twice in the past 2 weeks, and ate and went out in Bellavista a few times in the past two weeks, so what do I know :D One of the stays was just for an overnighter, in the middle of the Chile trip.

I have stayed at the San Christobal too ... very nice hotel, and I liked the location. BTW, they have a "party" each week for "Preferred Guests" ... invited by Ximena Perez (Gerente/Manager).

I am a little astonished regarding your comment about Bellavista: I found it a little dirty (when I passed by late afternoon), didn't see a nice restaurant .. it looked a little run-down to me....almost a little redlight..ish. I guess at night you see only the "shining lights".
I liked Providencia a lot, many nice restaurants. At "Aqui esta Coco"**) I had the best seafood I ever had ... well trained servers. Other, cheaper restaurants were also very good.
Don't get me wrong, I also like "plain" restaurants .. like "Donde Augusto" at Central Market.

  • I´d suggest the Sheraton or San Cristobal Tower (luxury side of the same property). With the new(ish) Costanera Norte freeway, it is 15+ minutes to/from the airport. There is a hotel close to the airport but it is not good for sightseeing. They are also building a Holiday Inn Express in the airport parking lot as we speak, but it is still an open air building :p . From the Sheraton it is a short walk to the Pedro de Valdivia metro (10 mins max). You are also a few minutes´cab ride from the Bellavista neighborhood, which has oodles of decent eats and nightlife, and has even undergone some decent improvement in the past year.
