AA or NW 5K award experience?

Is it viable to get a reward certificate and use that locally in Hawaii?
As to leaving early that is a common beneit of taking the interisland planes as to going later I would not bet on it as they do fill the planes for the last flights and you would hate to be stuck and paying for another ticket
They have recently trimmed the flight schedule and long term are working on some code sharing on flights so plan accordingly
I had no trouble getting interisland tickets for spring break and the flights i wanted
You have to contact AA or NW to make the res. and they will send you a paper ticket. That was my experience.
I typically went to the airport two hours before the depature time, and often there was an earlier flights available. So I stand by the earlier one and it was very simple.
Don't know Hawaii has changed their stnad by policy yet. If you can't get the schedule you want, get a later one and try the stand by.
As far as standing by for a later flight, I've never done it, but I suspect HA will accomodate you if they have room. The best thing would be to call them and verify, though.
What are your thoughts on effectively turning this into a stop-over? I want to do a roundtrip KOA-LIH-KOA. Can I stop-over in HNL for a night or two on the return, and just use the second half of the return ticket the following day?
If you fax a request today, you *may* be able to get a HA5A cert good for a year, which you can exchange for an interisland ticket at any time without penalty (at least so far). If you request goes through, you'll receive a cert in 21 days. You can then make your reservation when you're ready, and exchange your cert for a paper ticket on HA at the airport. Again, once you have your HA ticket issued by AA and have taken the outbound flight, if you want to change the return date, you might as well buy an interisland coupon because it will be cheaper.

You need to call the NW WorldPerks awards desk and have them book the seats for you. Doing so, you can't take advantage of NW's frequent online award booking discounts, but then what do you want for a 5,000 mile award?
Everytime I have requested it I have gotten my dates and times.
This is the only reason we book some miles to NWA, simply to take advantage of this good deal.
I was able to get two segment included for no additional points when a 48 state/Honolulu worldperks award is combined with two interisland segments.
on my most recent trip in September, the HNL/OGG outbound segment on Hawaiian was free because it was tied into the Northwest worldperks award outbound trip. On the return the LIH/HNL Hawaiian segment was free because that was considered part of the northwest Worldperks award return trip.
The other orphaned interisland segments I had to puchase from Worldperks and there was plenty of availability.
Good Luck!

I booked quite a few using Workldperks. I always got the dates I wanted, but I actually never flied on my schedule flights.

The NW CSR who booked our award tix said she herself does this!
If I don't want to book before leaving for Hawaii can AA/NW confirm electronic tickets on the phone with no last minute fees?

Does the reverse work? I.e. getting on a later flight if the only one that can be booked is too early?
Now, if you want to arrange a long connection in HNL (< 4 hrs), I think they will accomodate you. And if then you end up missing your HNL-KOA segment because you "got stuck in traffic" or something, I think the nice people at HA will probably let you board another flight on the same day, but most likely not the next day (unless you were scheduled to fly the last flight of the day - around 6:30 or 7:00p, and you end up missing that one). Worse that happens is you have to buy a new ticket, and are out $60-80 (depending on which ticket you buy).
If you try this, would you post the results?
With a bit of flexibility, you should be able to get your dates.
